Ok, Ok, joking aside....
It's sometimes called a "compliance meter" and it's used to show how many hours of use are on the CPAP. One use is so you will know how "old" the machine is if it needs service. Especially useful if it is a rental machine or is being used in a medical facility or nursing home.
Another is to prove that the patient is actually using the machine (or at least running it nightly). In some parts of Canada, for example, using CPAP is a requirement for retaining an OSA-diagnosed person's driving license, and this is "proof." Another example would be a trucker with a commercial license.
Yeah, I know ... anybody could fake it. Tell it to the judge.
