Your DME person either doesn't understand the auto-pap or is oversimplifying things.
The auto-pap machines start at an initial low pressure when you turn it on but increases the pressure when you need it. These machines detect apneas, hypopneas, or snoring by various methods and increase the pressure if you are having these events. The advantage to the auto-paps is that you are only given the pressure you need and no more. The other advantage is that they are usally good at acquiring data about your pressure levels number of events and mask leaks. The disadvantage to them is that they may not be able to detect events properly if you have COPD, have had surgery or snoreplasty. Some auto-pap machines will not work with certain humidifiers or masks.
Look back on previous forums for posts by Perry. He is the resident expert on auto-paps and his posts are a wealth of info on auto-paps.
I would study up on your needs and what you want. It sounds like your DME will be of little help regarding which machine may work for you and compatible equipment etc.
