Hi sleepyDave

What normally happens in Oz is that after your second sleep study, you'll have an appointment made to see the sleep dr, and at that time if you are to have CPAP, a list of CPAP suppliers will be given to you. Some will rent equipment and you can try different types. "Medical Equipment" in the yellow pages may help.

If you ring the main offices of the cpap makers or importers (eg ring ResMed in Sydney) they will give you details of stockists in Melbourne.

Medicare will give you a standard refund for the machine: if you have private insurance, they will give more. Then you pay for the remainder of whatever machine you select. A renter will normally credit you with the rent paid (or part) if you then buy that machine.

If you want to buy a machine for which there is monitoring software available, discuss this with the sleep dr, and they may give a letter recommending you buy it, but it is not a prescription item. Sometimes, the sleep dr would prefer you use the machine for a month or two and then make the request for the software. Some cpap suppliers will sell you the software without a letter if they feel it will be useful for you.

Sleep well,
Baz
