Autism - reflux
The relation of sleep related breathing disorders to reflux has been published in the September 2001 issue of the medical journal Chest. It appears on pages 1036 - 1037 and the hard copy version will be available in October. The electronic version will be available about September 12. That material is copyrighted to Chest. The relationship is that the forceful diaphragm action is transmitted by the phrenoesophageal ligament to the lower esophageal sphincter, opening it and allowing gastric fluids to enter the esophagus.
The forceful diaphragm action occurs during the respiratory events associated with upper airway resistance and with obstructive sleep apnea.Citation:
