Thanks to those who helped.

In 1998 a posting on sleepnet.com I stated my conclusion that obstructive sleep apnea caused ulcerative colitis.

I received two messages, one (from Sue) reported ulcerative colitis went into remission upon use of CPAP and the other (from Amy) reported that irritable bowel syndrome and reflux symptoms decreased almost completely with CPAP. These provided support that I was on the correct track. Thank you, young ladies.

Not replying to the post, Carolyn sent a couple of citations about reflux. I was not that interested in reflux. I was concentrating on ulcerative colitis. The lady sent me other citations on the other subjects, and I still did not appreciate the importance when I received them but eventually all turned out to be extremely useful. Thank you Carolyn, I appreciate your help. Without your citations this work would have been delayed.

In 1999 I opened a web site. Criticism from Joe (Wisconsin) spurred me to revise it. Thank you. Your criticism helped me focus. My web site has not been updated to include the information above.

While working on reflux I found the web site of Dr. Stiennon. His description of the PEL makes sense. Thank you.

Once I found Dr.Stiennon’s PEL I discovered the Penzel at al. paper which concluded that sleep apnea did not cause reflux. Yikes! This was contrary to my conclusion. However, that paper’s complete report of the information acquired during their investigation allowed me to change my conclusion. Fortunately, Perry had mentioned upper airway resistance syndrome and it was this that provided the ‘wiggle room’ which authenticated the change in my conclusion. Thanks to Penzel et al. and to Perry.

I submitted a letter on autism which, last month, was rejected. As I was rewriting it GBoogie, for the third time or more, reported his mother’s lucidity when she was using CPAP. Just as with Carolyn’s citations I did not immediately realize the importance. My previous work had been based on the violent movement of the diaphragm during respiratory events. I went to the ‘low oxygen’ aspects of OSA. Bingo! It was consistent. Thanks GBoogie.

I recommend the sleep test on this site at:

To all readers, I appreciate your indulgence. Thanks a bunch
Please see your physician.
