Pressure changes at the lower end of the scale probably would not have such an effect on you. I would think it more likely that you might have had a mask leak or the higher pressure induced you to unknowingly open your mouth at night, thus effectively reducing the pressure and making the cpap far less effective.

It is possible that the higher pressure affected your nasal passages and caused them to swell, thus making mouth breathing more likely.

Even though your pressures are low, you might try a bipap, though this is usually more required in the 12 and up pressure ranges.
