AWAKE in the Puget Sound Area

Posted by Jo (Seattle, WA) on September 13, 2001 at 10:33:15:

Hi folks! Barb (Seattle) and I attended AWAKE support group meetings several years ago but, due to internal organizational issues and lack of proactive advertising, the (very small) group disbanded. I don't know if another group has started in the Seattle area? If there isn't an active group (I'm really really hoping there IS!!), I'm wondering how much interest there is among Western Washington folks?? I'm willing to do whatever basic groundwork is needed to get a group up and running if y'all feel this would be of benefit.

For those of you who aren't familiar with AWAKE:

"The ASAA A.W.A.K.E. Network is composed of approximately
200 mutual-help support groups in nearly all 50 states for
people affected by sleep apnea. The Network, founded in
1988, is an integral part of the American Sleep Apnea
Association (ASAA) and since 1990, the two have been
partners in assisting patients, their families, and the
healthcare community concerned with sleep apnea.

Committed to the belief that the ASAA A.W.A.K.E. Network
must be patient-centered, local A.W.A.K.E. members plan and
implement each group's activities so that they meet the
needs of each individual group. Meetings, led by the
A.W.A.K.E. coordinator, are held regularly and guest speakers are often invited to address the group. Topics may include advice on complying with CPAP therapy, legal issues affecting those with sleep apnea, weight loss, and new research findings."

If you have information about active local groups or interest in seeing one formed, please give a holler! Thanks!

Jo
