Until last night, the events of September 11 seemed far away. Oh, yes, I felt the horror and grief and anger as did everyone who watched and listened to the news. I greatly felt the loss of the security we have come to expect as American citizens. But there was still much distance, both emotionally and physically, between me and the attacks. Then, my husband informed me that a business acquaintance from a company with which he has been working on a project was on one of the planes. This brought the events closer to home, but the events that occurred yesterday in the town I live in have really upset me. My 16-yr old daughter called me at work to tell me that she was scared because there were FBI and police all over town. I live in Vero Beach, Fl. and all of the houses raided yesterday are within a 4 mile radius of my home. The terrorists and their families had become part of our community, shopping at the same grocery stores, and sending their kids to the same schools as I and my neighbors do. We moved here nearly 20 years ago to live and raise our kids in the relative security of a small town. And now I feel we have been violated by these few people who used us to prepare them to make these attacks on us. It is an awful feeling.

However, as difficult as it is, we, as a nation need to remember that we are all descended from other cultures and that is what makes our nation great. We need to be careful to not falsely accuse the vastly large number of innocent people on the basis of their country of origin, color, or beliefs as the number of those responsible for the terrorism or in support of it is small in comparison. I hope that our government is able to take quick and appropriate action, but I know that this war, declared or undeclared, is unlike any that we have ever fought. We will never be the same.
