The US does have an air-marshall program in which plain clothes marshalls ride some planes. I think they have guns, which they must know would work. I think that if a hole is shot in the side of the plane, it will cause a leak, maybe even a big hole, but I doubt it would destroy the plane. Maybe they have a weapon of the proper calibre, bullet weight, powder weight, etc, that minimizes that risk. Many years ago an airplane in Hawaii had a protin of the top of the fuselage rip off, sucking a flight attendant out, but I'm sure the plane landed safely. I will say, however, that it's possible that other parts of the plane or other planes may be super-succeptible to bullets.
