As with so many of the other posters, my heart aches today with the devastation that has been wreaked on us all. Until today, I had purposely been limiting my viewing of TV and the newspapers because I was caught up in trying to keep myself together for my class of 5th graders. Today, however, my husband and I had our appointments with the sleep doctor, so I had the day off. When I got back from the appointment, I made the mistake of turning on the TV. The never-ending barrage of violent images simply over-whelmed me with grief for the enormity of this tragedy. My students yesterday kept asking if we were going to be okay and I tried to allay their fears as best I could. Today I'm not so sure.

As some others have said, this horror has touched the lives of so many, not just those in New York and Washington. I live in the Boston area. In tonight's paper I found out that one of those who died on the United plane that hit the second tower of the World Trade Center was a former assistant pastor in my parish. This was a truly wonderful, kind man going to visit his sister in California. Because of the actions of religious fanatics, the life of a man of God has been snuffed out. I am struggling to reconcile in my mind that a God of wisdom and love can allow not only this priest, but also so many other innocents to perish in such a horrific way.

Somehow, some way we, as a nation, must truly come together in our conviction of purpose that these UNHOLY lunatics will NOT be allowed to get away with this. We must show the SOB's that terrorism will NOT defeat freedom and democracy. I am normally very much a pacifist; however, I do not believe that we can permit the perpetrators of these heinous acts to continue to exist. Now is the time to flush them out of their hiding spots, cowards that they are, and bomb them and their suppporters/collaborators to kingdom come. If they truly believe that dying for their beliefs is the ultimate glory, I say that we should give them their wish and rid the world of their evil.

While I rant against the lunatic fringe who committed these crimes, I believe as fervently that we cannot paint all those of the Islamic belief system or of the same ethnicities with the same brush of condemnation. It is vital that we refrain from witch hunts that lump all into the same bubbling caldron of hate. To do that is to reduce our humanity to the same level as the despicable creatures who claim to work in the name of Allah.

Tonight as we drift off to sleep, let's say a prayer for the immeasurable sadness and loss of those whose loved ones have died or are missing or hurt. Let us also pray for ourselves and our country that we will be proud of who we are and what we stand for. I am very thankful to be an American.
