Survived first cold with CPAP

Posted by Boston on September 26, 2001 at 11:32:31:

After seven months on CPAP, I got my first cold. I had been worried I wouldn't be able to use the equipment, but found it wasn't too much of a problem. Perhaps I just wasn't as clogged up as with some colds, but I tend to think the air pressure also helped keep my passages open. A couple of experiences were interesting:

I figured extra humidity would help, so turned up my humidifier. Big mistake, it just caused rainout. Yuck, nothing worse than being woken up by inhaling water drops!

My nostrils were sore from blowing, so I dabbed on a fair amount of AYR gel one night. Apparently I used too much, I suddenly had leaks with my nasal pillows, which is very rare for me. In the process of removing the pillows from the shell and wiping them carefully, I found just a bit of mold on the inside of the pillows at the last crease where it inserts in the shell--need to do better with my cleanup.

Semi-clogged nostrils one night gave me a bit of that claustrophobic "I can't breathe" feeling, but I took slow, deep breaths, kept telling myself to relax, I really could breathe, and I was able to settle down. But I really sympathize with those of you who have serious chronic congestion, it must be really difficult.
