I think the picture is getting clearer every year: sleep deprivation can cause metabolic changes. Also, I've read in various places that poor sleep or interrupted sleep causes extra corticosteroids in your system which also packs on the pounds. It is my belief that apnea causes weight gain which then worsens the apnea, heading into a vicious cycle. I say this because I lost 110 pounds to a normal weight for my height and still had moderate apnea. And there are quite a few thin or normal weight people with apnea out there.
