Ditto to the suggestions of "trial runs" with the mask on while sitting up reading, watching TV, meditating or whatever relaxs you and takes the focus off the mask.
I am not Claustrophobic but had a similiar problem in my first sleep "ordeal" and as a result, went home and "tried to get better on my own" for almost a year(of course my condition worsened)and made my mind up that I had to do a full sleep study with the mask and although I really never "got to full sleep" so the doc says, they did get enough info to set up my CPAP and after 4 months, I am well on my way to reclaiming my life!
Don't give up, I think those that tolerate the mask right off are the minority and veeery fortunate.
I am using an Ultra Mirage and am very pleased with the comfort and wake up sometimes and don't even realize I have it on, but some nights I also still wake up struggling with it too. It is not an easy road to success but the results are really worth the persistance.
I originally thought I could never tolerate the CPAP also.
You CAN do it too!!!!
