Spence,

I thought I was the only one to have this "Ballooned Mouth Blowout" complaint. I like the name you gave it since it describes perfectly what I'm experiencing. I'll have to remember that description(Ballooned Mouth Blowout or BMB).

I have been on CPAP(pressure=12) using the Adams Circuit(nasal pillows) for about 3 weeks. I also tried several chin(lip) straps(including RenoToms) but air would still leak out unless the chin(lip) straps were so tight that my chin and lips turned blue.

I also tried experimenting with tongue exercises but found out that I can still exhale through my lips regardless of what position my tongue is in.

The micropore tape I tried would only last about 1-2 hours so I switched to 2 horizontal pieces of Duct tape. That seemed to last about 4 hours before I would blow a leak through the Duct tape and needed to replace it.

I tried a Mirage Full-Face mask at the DME's office and that seemed to help(since the pressure between the nose and mouth are the same) so I have one on order(DME didn't have quite the right size). Since I'm a side sleeper, I'm not sure how well the full face mask will work throughout the entire night. Have you tried a full face mask yet?

Since you've lost 20 lbs, you might be able to use a lower pressure but only another sleep test could confirm that. The only other option(which you might consider trying) is a BiPAP machine since the exhale pressure is lower than the inhale pressure.

By the way, when using tape across my lips and I get that "Ballooned Mouth Blowout", I've found that the easiest way to get rid of the "Blowout"(instead of swallowing the air) is to attempt to INHALE through my taped mouth. Doing that draws the air remaining in my mouth back into my lungs which I then exhale through my nose. This "Ballooned Mouth Blowout" can really feel weird when it wakes me up and I'm breathing normally(in and out) through my nose but, at the same time, have my cheeks "ballooned out". If you come up with any solutions that help you with Mouth Blowout, let us know and good luck!
