Amy - The Indian Pacific train did have a "coach" section but I don't think the seats included power outlets for computers. This part of the train was populated mainly by the younger backpackers and people just travelling part of the way. Most passengers had some manner of compartment (first or second class, single or shared) with a power outlet.

2nd Generation - I am sorry to say I don't know this book. An interesting read on travel "outback" is Bruce Chatwin's Songlines. (Or is it Song Lines?)
