My first night on CPAP - advice needed!

Posted by gseab on October 31, 2001 at 11:21:58:

Last night was my first night sleeping (actually NOT sleeping) with a CPAP machine. I wonder if the problem is with the mask. The mask I tried during my sleep study seemed thicker, almost like compressed foam rubber, and fit more softly on my face ... the one that came with my CPAP machine is thinner hard plastic, and seeing as how I have rather prominent cheekbones, the pressure from the mask seemed concentrated on my cheekbones. Also, every time I moved an inch or so, air whooshed out of the sides of the mask. I spent about 3 hours trying to lie perfectly still, adjusting the mask constantly, and finally fell asleep only to keep waking up due to painful pressure or air leaking. I adjusted that mask every which way, moved the air hose into several positions, and basically did everything else I could think of before finally taking the mask off and settling for whatever sleep I could get. It's only my first night, and I expect some adjustment time, but can anyone offer me any tips that could speed up the process? I would be most appreciative. My machine is a Respironics REMstar Plus and the mask is RESMED Ultra Mirage. Thank you.
