The description you give of the Ultra-mirage mask (thin hard plastic) doesn't sound like the one I have. Make sure you have it fully/properly assembled, and if this fails, change it for a more comfortable mask - perhaps the one used for your sleep study.

I've only been using CPAP for a couple of weeks, but your experience reminds me of my first nite as well.
The inconvenience of the mask took time to adjust to. I now find the Ultra-Mirage very convenient, but, the secret, I think, is keeping the straps relatively loose. They should not leave an imprint on your skin in the morning. I,too, have prominent cheek bones, and - for me at least - this has posed no problem. However, I have played around with different sizes of ultra mirage (the technician suggested "standard", which felt like it tweaked the upper part of my nose, so I tried "Large", which leaked, so I went back to the original standard, and found that it just took getting used to).

If my experience can be of any benefit to you, I would add that a good part of my adjustment went towards easing tension and anxiety with the machine/mask and even more so - the hope and expectations that at last I had found a solution to the previously unexplained chronic fatigue that plagued me for longer than I can remember.

Good luck. Have patience and know that despite the inconvenience, the CPAP has already helped many - as atested on this forum - regain a decent quality of life.
