Thank you all for your suggestions and encouragement. After five nights I'm still struggling with the mask, waking up several times in the night (isn't that what the CPAP was supposed to prevent?) ... just can't seem to fall asleep and stay asleep with such an unnatural contraption strapped to my face ... last night I thought, "Good grief, I can get a lousy night's sleep WITH this thing or WITHOUT it," but I'm determined to try it for a full month before making a final judgement. Thanks, everyone.
