Posted by Empty Nester on November 12, 2001 at 17:58:27:Here's an interesting possible connection for sleep disorders in my family. My 75 year old mother had a very minor stroke on Friday morning which, thankfully, was caught in time resulting in no lingering adverse effects. They kept her overnight in the hospital just as a precaution and released her on Saturday. She said that she had a terrible time trying to sleep in the hospital because of constantly restless legs. Come to find out, this being something I was never aware of, this has been somewhat of a problem for her for quite some time and she has taken care of it by taking an aspirin which allows her to sleep. Since Friday, the restless leg thing has been more or less constant and has not been alleviated by the aspirin treatment.
Mom has always been extremely active and, fortunately, in very good health overall. She is an intelligent medical consumer who is diligent about preventive healthcare both for herself and my dad. She only retired from her job two months ago and has had difficulty adjusting to the slower pace. The lady can still run rings around many people half her age.
When I found out about the restless leg problem, I started thinking about a few other things that we have teased her about for years, such as her frequent yawning and the fact that no one can remember when the last time was that Mom could sit through a movie or television show without conking out in seconds. As I said earlier, she has enormous amounts of energy, so I never stopped to put the pieces together, but I'm wondering if she might not have a sleep disorder that is all of a sudden catching up to her. She does not have, and never has had, high blood pressure. The doctors said that the preliminary CT scan and blood work do not indicate a blockage to the arteries. They haven't totally ruled out a blood clot that disolved as a possible cause of the stroke.
Mom goes back to the doctor tomorrow for follow-up and I suggested to her that she ask about the possibility that she has a sleep disorder that might have contributed to the incident. We'll have to see if the doctor picks up on it and orders a sleep study.
