There are many who have a sudden and "profound" improvement in their first days of CPAP use. Many of those have a sudden return to feeling much like before they started CPAP use, or maybe even worse. It seems that those who experience this have very low oxygen desaturation numbers.
I only tell you this so that if it does happen, you aren't totally blown away. Sleep apnea is a condition that sneaks up on you and takes your life away. It doesn't give it back readily. You have to work at it by means of responsible CPAP use, and correct sleep habits. You have developed what is known as a "sleep debt" which you must pay back before you will really start to see profound improvements, and that may take awhile.
I experienced my most dramatic improvements in the first year, and continued improvements after that. I still continue to identify improvements after 29 months.
I have severe obstructive and central sleep apnea which affected me for many years prior to my diagnosis.
I like most sleep apnea sufferers, have paid my dues to experience the improvements I have gained. It is well worth it. Don't give up on CPAP therapy, or try to take short cuts. Use this forum for information and support. Or even for a place to vent. Ask questions, and read all that you can. The more you learn, the easier it will be for you.
And get your wife (and kids) to read this forum also. Perhaps if they learn a little of what this condition is about, they may gain a small bit of understanding. I'm not suggesting that that will make everything right, but it may help a little. This is a condition that is hard, if not impossible, to understand if you don't experience it. That goes for our families, our friends, and even our medical care givers.
By getting your wife to understand just a little, it may make a little bit of a difference in the future.
