In the evening sit in a comfortable chair, put on your mask and turn the machine on. Read or watch the tube, and relax.
If you have trouble with breathing, then think about how you breath without the mask on, and do just that. Try to take deliberate breaths, and breath deeply.
If you get claustrophobic, think about what you are confronting. Yes, we can conjure up all kinds of weird scenarios, but in reality it is some plastic, cloth and air coming through a tube. Think of it as it is, and consider that it is going to change your life for the better!
If you fall asleep, no big deal. But better to just practice for awhile, then go to bed at your regular sleep time.
Dareesa, we give our machines names, take them with us on trips (there are many CPAP machines that are more widely traveled than I'll ever be), bath them regularly, make sure they only breath clean air (we change the filters), and in general do pretty nice things for our machine. I have never heard of one turning on it's owner, or doing bad things on the floor, and they really don't fail us very often. They make pretty good bedside companions.
