You'll hear a loud chorus from people whose lives have changed for the better after adapting to CPAP. I'm also one, but I don't see much point in just adding to the choir.
Some points:
- what was the pressure prescribed 3 year ago?
- when is your new sleep study? Your prescription is out of date and should be rejected by any equipment supplier.
- if your apnea is predominantly obstructive sleep apnea, and your head falls forward when sleeping in a chair, you are likely making the apnea worse. You will probably find on CPAP that you will develop a preference for a low pillow when you are sleeping on your back, and that your head-neck-shoulders will go instinctively into the CPR position (head back, nose high) which minimizes airflow obstruction.
- The Mallinckrodt Breeze headgear, fitted with nasal pillows, may be very much more to your liking than a nasal or full-face mask. It also works particularly well for people who like to read, and who use glasses. You will see a photo of it at http://www.mallinckrodt.com/respiratory/productcatalog/product.asp?id=208- a full-face mask is necessary for folk who need to mouth breathe. Were you identified as a mouth breather when you were studied 3 years ago?
Given your skepticism (or 'show-me' truculence!) you would be well advised to practice using the equipment while in your usual upright position. It does need practice and familiarization - it needs will and work on your part - so you'll very probably be disappointed (or/and be vindicated in your belief that you know better than your advisers) if you first use the equipment by going to a strange place called bed and defying the equipment to make you sleep.
In short, stop challenging the equipment. Challenge yourself to make your own life better, longer and more responsible, much as other folk do when they come to an understanding that they must give up smoking or alcohol.
The equipment works.
