Posted by Getting advice for a friend on November 23, 2001 at 06:11:36:I had a friend go from being a sound sleeper to not sleeping much at all within a couple days. After a long process of getting his doctor to take the problem of not sleeping seriously, he got a referral to a sleep clinic. Incidently a sleep clinic that could only help if it was apnea.
After a night of sleep he was diagnosed as an apnea patient. However, he is a non-snorer. Take my word, I know. The dental split didn't work, and then we find out the doctor at the sleep clinic can't prescribe any medicines. The advice of adjusting the split strikes me as "try this, try that" type of problem solving. I don't think the doctor really knows.
I read in your forums about allergies, and the one thing that happened a few days before was the acquisition of cats. So he is sleeping in a cat free environment for a few days with the dental split to see if he can sleep.
The nights when he does sleep, he falls asleep late, then wakes up in the middle of the night and doesn't get much sleep or no sleep.
I somewhat think that apnea is a pat answer that doctors pick. However, people with sleep disorders may snore, but does every snorer have a sleep disorder? I think the abrupt change in his sleep habits tends to rule out apnea. I can tell you that there wasn't a gradual problem that he only became aware of in a few days. Take my word for it.
Additionaly his primary don't-care physician tried ambion, claritin-D, sudafed. We have tried sominex. We tried herbal teas sleep teas. (The box illustrations are ready to put me to sleep).
So my questions are these:
1. Sudden onset of severe sleep disorder, what could be the possible causes and why?
2. Apnea, has anyone critically reviewed whether this diagnosis is over done?
3. What recommendations do you have for the next step?
4. Which of the other forums do you recommend?
Thanks
