I can't help you much from the attorney angle, and personally think it's just a side track anyway, let's take a look at the real issue. Does your friend have sleep apnea, or another sleep disorder?
Although it's not a definate answer, in many cases a bed partner (or friend) may observe the individual while their sleeping. Sleep apnea commonly manifiests itself with snoring, then a pause in breathing (and snoring), then a snorting and heaavy breathing. This would take place throughout the night, but is very common and easy to listen to around the 4 or 5 AM time period, when sleep apnea is typically worse because of the lengtened REM perid typically occuring around this time.
Of course it could be another disorder, or a combination of disorders. For any sleep disorder, the best avenue to follow would be an appointment with a board certified sleep doctor and after his evaluation (and with his recommendation) a full polysomnogram (sleep study) administered at a certified sleep center.
Of course there are costs involved, and it sounds like insurance may be a problem. However sleep disorders are conditions that have far reaching effects that can become debilitating and in some rare cases cause death either directly or indirectly. At the very least they shorten ones life span.
Sleepnet.com is one of the best sources of information for sleep conditions. I suggest you read all available information here, and then use the links to related sites. Amoung those links are sites of the various accredidating agencies and other organizations.
It is unfortionate that your friends health care professionals are not up to par. Amongst the links are organizations that you can pass information on to that may be able to take action, especially if they are members of organizations and doing substandard work.
Of course the primary consideration here is for your friend. I hope this helps some.
