I think you will find that there is more research and medical activity in the sleep apnea field than you may realize. It's a shame that your friend is being bounced around on treatment, of course. Although this is not uncommon, especially in some geographical areas, it is rapidly improving. Sleep apnea diagnosis and treatment is one of the hot medical growth areas here in the northeast USA, for example. It is a new-ish field, however, and like all new areas of endeavor it takes quite a while to get everyone on board. I'm not saying this is an excuse, but it is hard to get some doctors without training in the field to take you seriously.
