sleep apnea dental devices work??

Posted by john on November 25, 2001 at 14:04:29:

I'm 28 years old slightly overweight and was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea. My Ent claims its mild and really insignificant, however, after several months of chronic fatigue I was able to get my insurance to pay for the CPAP machine.

However, now that I have it, I can't fall alsleep with it. First, I felt I couldn't even breath with the mask, so I was able to get the nasal pillows. I thought that really helped and I felt I could at least breath. But again, due to my wonderful biology, I can't fall asleep while on the machine and if I take it off mid point, my sleep usually is disturbed and I don't get any rem sleep. I try to use the machine on weekends or for the holiday week. My ent suggested I take some ambien to help me fall asleep with the machine. However, the ambien or any other sedatives make me feel like a zombie. I tried to use the machine for the holiday weekend and again, I could'nt sleep with it. I guess I'll try it again next weekend. I can't afford to be even more zombie like, so I don't use it during the work week>?/

Any advice?? Does it usually take this much time to get used to the machine??

If this doesn't work, I was thinking about the dental devices?? However, I don't believe my insurance pays for these dental devices and I know the cost is about 2,000. Do you know if there are any cheaper dental devices that I could at least try to see if these will work, without once again spending all this money for something that doesn't help.

This is frustrating and is destroying my life. Thank god at least there are other people out there that I can relate to about this.
