Chuck,
We seem to have some things in common. Physically about the same height and weight, relatively good physical condition (I am older though, and have run for 25+ years). I have been on CPAP for over a year and I found on the second sleep study that it has not helped. It has eliminated snoring but not the sleep interuptions. I don't want to go into those details, but to point out I have similar problems with breathing through the nose.
I found the full face mask to be more comfortable because your cheeks don't puff when the palate relaxes. The static pressure of the CPAP makes it easier to breathe through the nose, which I cannot do all night without the mask. From personal experience and what I read here, be patient with fitting the mask and finding ways to control the hose etc to eliminate leakage as much as you can. Look at it this way, if the CPAP is not working for you, you are likely no worse than before.
