Hi Joe,
My sleep book encyclopedia says that it is the amount of sleep that occurs duirng a sleep episode in relation to the amount of time available for sleep.
Usuall it recorded as total sleep time and that a sleep efficiency of greater than 80% is regarded as normal in the sleep laboratory and that those greater than 95% are indicative of abnormaly high sleep efficiency and are typically seen in patients with narcolepsy or idiopathic hypersomnia.
Sleep efficiences of less than 80% are typical of disorders than produce a complaint of insomnia.
