Within 2 or 3 days of starting CPAP I developed a sinus infection that took 6 weeks of antibiotics and prescription decongestnts to clear up. My doctor told me to 'play' with the CPAP humidication to see if I needed more, or less humidication. I really could have used more guidance about the humidication. From what I know now I think I would have recovered much faster if I had greatly increased the humidity. After I recovered for about a month I started using the Adams nasal pillow system, and developed fluid in the ear, with occasional feelings of air blowing out my ear (so another round of decongestants). Even though I first developed sinus infection while using a nasal mask, and have no problems now; I find that if I use the nasal pillows for more than 1 or 2 nights in a row I start to have problems with my ears. I have seen here on this forum quite a few who initially develope sinus infections when they start CPAP, but as they continue it seems they find their sinuses better than they have ever been (it has also worked out that way for me). I think perhaps, that when a person first starts CPAP and it starts 'moving' some of that (longtime) stuffyness out it ends up in the sinuses and ears; then as it gets treated and CPAP continues things get clearer and clearer, and we end up 'better than we have been in years'. This is my hypothesis anyway.

Even though I use a good whole house humidifier, I have found I am needing to turn my CPAP humidifier up higher all the time - I am now at 3 1/2 (out of 4). I am sure when summer humidity comes I will be turning it down again, but with winter I can't seem to get enough humidity.
