When we say mouth breathing we mean that we are opening our mouths and the air is coming through our nostrils and out our mouths instead of down our throat. Therefore, the C-PAP is rendered ineffective because it doesn't keep the air-way open. And, yes, you do wake up when you "mouth breathe" but you wake up gasping for breath. Some of us have such problems that an ordinary chin strap won't work, since the air still leaks out through our lips and we have to make some adjustments for that too.
