I think you're on to something here.

I've found myself doing the shallow breathing thing. Maybe my body's just trying to conserve energy. I remember thinking once "if I only didnt have to breath I could completely relax". My breathing isnt labored (as far as I know) but it does take energy. Sometimes I wonder if I'm breathing so shallow that I'm actually breathing mostly my own co2. I dont have trouble breathing when working out or bike riding. Mostly I'm in great shape with a resting pulse of 55 and a bp of 120/70.

Because of this email I'm going to make a special effort to expand my rib cage at the gym. Probably by lying over a bench with weights lifted behind my head. Also lat-pull downs should help.

I've also noticed that I feel really good for about an hour after taking 3-5 very deep breaths. I've told myself I should just set my watch and do this every hour. I'm looking for a pulse/ox meter that will record but having a terrible time finding one under $1200 w/software - any clues?

I suppose mechanical effects like bad posture, tight clothes and body fat could also make breathing harder.

My guess was that yawning was just lower o2, but you could be right. Any of you med-geeks know for sure? :)
