Unfortunately the studies to date on AutoCPAP vs CPAP produces a mixed series of results - or are out of date (all machines currently on the market are different than they were several years ago - just like automobile models are different from what they were several years ago).

There have also been several studies that did not use good methodology.

I am sure that better studies are on their way - just that there is actually nothing overwhelming in their favor yet.

Personally, I think most of the studies that I have seen were flawed in that they used "wide open" settings on the AutoCPAPs (i.e: 4-20) instead of setting the AutoCPAP in relationship to a persons titration (if you need 16, the machine cannot get from 4 to 16 fast enough to prevent problems, but it can get from 12 to 16 fast enough for most people).

There are other reasons for using AutoCPAPs - if nothing else some of them collect the most usefull data on how well you and the machine are doing (especially if one of you is not doing well). Several of the machines will spot and track mask leaks so that you can find and fix the problem (CPAP is not effective during a major mask leak).

If you review what the machines can do you will see advantages. Forum 69 has a good descripiton of how the machines available in the US work. I think that the discussion extended to software into forum 70. Both postings were by myself (look for postings by "Perry" in those forums). I have also posted extensively on other aspects in many other forums. It might be best to search by specific machine name for other details on each machine.
