Is a Humidifier essential?

I have successfully used a CPAP for seven years, and have never used a humidifier. A few days in the Winter I will have a dry nose, but it has never been a problem. With all the comments I hear about rainout (condensation) in the hose I would be hesitant to make a universal recommendation. Some may have limited financial resources or no insurance. Why complicate things if you don't have to.
