This is what wew would call onthis forum a central apnea, i.e. one where there is no breathing effort made, but the airway is still open.

The 418P calls it cardiac apnea because it means that with the cessation of flow, they can still 'see' the heart beating (i.e. cardiac), so the airway must be open.

By default the machine will not trigger an increase when it sees a cardia apnea, but you can turn this trigger on so that it will make an increase.

There have been many posts here before about why responding to central apneas may not be a good idea.
