A cousin of mine developed polycythemia as he grew older because he owned a ranch that was located at around 10,000+ feet above sea level in the Colorado Rockies where the air is very thin. He used to puff his cheeks when he was working to hold air in longer and squeeze the last bit of oxygen out of a breath. Unbeknownst to anyone, he would sneak into the maintenance shed and suck oxygen from the welding machine during the day. He was eventually diagnosed (after having a heart attack) and went to the local hospital to be bled from time to time. Eventually as an old man he sold the ranch to the Federal Government (it's now part of Rocky Mountain National Park) and moved to a much lower elevation.
