I am receiving SSA and teacher's insurance disability for OSA. I had to be examined by a SSA psychiatrist and after the results of the cognitive testing, there was no problem.I received very helpful advice from a doctor who is now disabled by OSA. He said to file, and if it is turned down, you appeal it. You won't need a lawyer unless and until you need to appeal.
OSA is listed on the Americans with Disabilities Act and you have been granted disability through veterans.
You may have to make sure that all of your files with the military are copied to SSA.
Also, be prepared that it will take awhile.
To respond to what John said, it's true that apnea is treatable with cpap or surgery, but some people have had such severe apnea that they have incurred some brain damage or other damage to organs and treatment is not always successful. Bottom line: each case is different and you won't know until you try.
