I think a cause of discrepencies is that some preople get little or no sleep, so the lab doesn't get good data. Also, I think that people may sleep in different positions in the lab than they do at home, so the pressure setting is different. Also, I think some poeple have alcohol before going to bed normally, but not at the sleep lab, so their pressure setting isn't enough. There are a number of other differences between home and sleep centers. Reading posts, I notice that some instruments aren't used at some sleep studies, so that can be a discrepency. I think these things are more of factors than what you mention.
