There is a whole spectrum of "Sleep Disordered Breathing". This runs from snoring to UARS, to hypopneas, to apneas. All are the result of an unstable upper airway while asleep. The end result is numerous cortical (brain) arousals causing excessive daytime sleepiness, and oxygen desaturations causing cognitive impairment and cardiovascular/pulmonary problems.
