Cold passover vs heated humidifier in humid FLA!

Posted by tomtom on February 09, 2002 at 01:11:39:

Can anyone who lives in either south FL or a similar, mostly humid environment, and who has experience with cold vs. heated humidifier for CPAP, comment on their experiences? I just began using a cold passover humidifier for the first time after being on CPAP for almost 2 years - but after 2 sinus infections in the past year and chronic bouts of sinus congestion, I thought maybe humidification would help. I don't, however, get a really "dry nose" or nosebleeds - just the congestion sometimes, and irritated sinus passages, or sometimes the blowing air just seems a little dry and irritating. The first night on the cold humidification seemed to be an improvement - but everyone seems to be so big on heated, heated, heated for some reason, and I wonder why? Maybe the heated is more needed or beneficial in either colder or drier climates?? I guess that is my main question. My home care rep tells me that from her experience in my area (southwest FL), most of her patients who have tried heated humidification said it was too much down here, too warm, or that they ended up with really heavy nasal secretions (actually she said "so much snot" but I was trying to be nice! LOL). Anybody have any comments on heated vs. cold in a more humid environment, and what I am being told? Why is heated supposedly so much better than cold, at least in some places? Hope someone can clear up my confusion!!
