I turn mine up all the way. The air is not hot to the touch. If, somehow, you find it too warm (don't think that this is likely), you can put it on a lower setting.

The worst downside is that you've thrown out money. I can't possibly see any harm from this. Also, there's an outside chance that you'll have < 46 episodes per hour with a heated humidifier.
