Posted by Katnapper on February 14, 2002 at 19:09:07:Thought I'd post an update of how I am doing. Monday my doctor faxed a prescreption to the DME and I was able to pick up my c-pap that afternoon. Despite my worrying everything has been very smooth. The rep at the DME was fantastic!!! This DME has 3000 patients on CPAP and she has 14 yrs experience.
The rep gave me a copy of the report from the Dr.
My AHI was 72 or 73 (the report is on my desk at work) As it turns out my insurance company is wonderful with CPAP patients. They approved everything - I have a Resmed CPAP set at 12. A sullivan humidifier and the new mirage mask.I have my appt with the sleep Dr. on the 21st. I asked the rep her opinion on the various sleep labs & drs in town (I know - I should have asked BEFORE I went..but who can think without sleep?)
The rep said that of all in town only two she would reccommend to family - mine was one of the two.Now for the report:
1st night - It was a little tricky trying to get comfortable and go to sleep. Thank goodness for the ramp and chinstrap! Slept 4 hours woke to go to the bathroom and was amazed at how easily I was breathing!! I felt so good I didn't want to remove the mask! It took about 45 minutes to go back to sleep and the rest of the night was so-so. When I woke I couldn't tell much difference but didn't have a headache or dry mouth.
2nd night - Basically the same as night #1 except when I woke after 4 hours I could NOT go back to sleep. I finally got up..BUT...unlike most other sleepless nights I did get a great deal done. I was up from 2AM and quite wired all day. I did not feel sleepy - just crazy!
3rd night- WOW! I waited till I was very sleepy-about 10 PM, Limited liquids after 7PM and this time I slept 11 hours straight through - Like a baby!!! I can't remember sleeping this well since I was a kid! Today I felt great! My mind was much clearer and I was able to deal with a stressful day better that usual. I am SO encouraged.
I do have one problem that the rep and I are adressing. I have Very sensitive skin and will have to try nasal pillows. If nothing else I will have to switch around or my skin will be a mess(I'll deal) She sent me the nasal pillows today (I think it's an Adams?) and will help me if I have any problems adjusting it. Thankfully my ins will pay for more than one mask for every six months or a year.
From reading other forums I know I may have rebounds and other problems and with all the wonderful help on this forum I will do my best to handle what comes. I am so grateful that you are all here.
I had a glimpse of what it might be like to get my life back and it sure looked good to me.
Thanks to all for the encouragement. I'll keep you posted. H-e-r-e-'s.......BEDTIME!
