First Roadtrip with CPAP coming up

Posted by Newbie in Chicago on February 15, 2002 at 11:54:13:

I am about to travel (by air) with my CPAP for the first time (weekend of 3/8-10). I would be grateful for any advice (e.g. anyone have trouble getting the machine through airport security, especially post 9/11?). I'll be staying with relatives, so plugging in once I'm ther will be no problem. Also, the flight is short, so I'm not worried about in-flight usage on that trip.

A month later, however, I'll be on a red-eye from SFO to the East Coast, and will need to drive once I land, and so will need to be alert. Can CPAP be hooked up on a plane?

Finally, anyone with experience explaining the machine to small children? Don't want to freak out my 5 year-old neices.

TO sum up then, 3 questions:

1. Getting CPAP through airport security
2. Surviving long overnight flights
3. Explaining CPAP to small kids (ca. 5 years old).

Thanks in advance to all.
