Train to keep mouth closed??

Posted by hosehead on February 15, 2002 at 20:25:54:

When I first started CPAP, I woke up sometimes with a terribly dried out mouth and throat, and realized it was due to opening my mouth and the air rushing out of my mouth. I hated the chin-strap, and couldn't seem to get it to help much or adjusted right, or have it stay on right all night anyway. But, I am assuming I must have trained myself to pretty much keep my mouth shut (even better than a wife can do! LOL), because I virtually never have a dried out mouth/throat anymore, and that's without using a chin strap, and with everything else still the same (still no humidifier). Is this common in adjusting to CPAP to "train" yourself to keep your mouth closed and not need to use a chin strap or full face mask? I wish I knew if I was no longer opening my mouth for sure, because I know that doing so defeats the effectiveness of the CPAP to some degree. I hope that I can assume that no more dried-out mouth/throat means that I am indeed keeping my mouth shut all night??
