Hello Lawrence,
You may have in fact developed an addiction to the medications, but most likely what you are having is a rebound from using the antihistamine. By relying so much on the antihistamine to control the allergic response in your respiratory system you are preventing your body from cleaning out the antigens you have inhaled. These have built up in your sinuses and elsewhere and when you try to stop using the drug everything reacts to the antigens. For many people, this can be just an uncomfortable annoyance. For others, it can be dangerous.
With your asthma and the level of dependence on the drugs, you need to see an allergist/pulmonologist for assistance in controlling your allergic response while discontinuing the antihistamines.
I have many severe allergies and spent many years with severe cronic asthma. During that time, I dealt with rebound several times until I decided to never use antihistamines again. Instead, I take a daily dose of decongestant. By doing so, I sometimes have the discomfort of dealing with my allergies, but the decongestant keeps everything broken loose and flowing so it can clear out.
My heated humidifier has also made a major difference in the health of my respiratory system.
The warm moist air helps soothe and heal the tissues in my respiratory system and control my response to the allergies.Get to a good allergist.
Jim
