Heart Rate Spikes

Posted by Nancy in Colorado on March 11, 2002 at 05:18:52:

When I went in for my annual physical a couple of weeks ago, I obtained the results of my sleep study. From following this forum for the last year, I understood most of the report, but one thing looks a little strange.

The last page was a graph of several measurements, one of them heart rate (BPM). For most of the night, it appeared to be fairly stable at around 70 BPM. However, there were several "spikes" that went up into the next category (Pulse Oximetry). A couple of them spiked extremely high, where if measured on the same BPM scale, reached about 180 BPM. What causes this and is it normal to spike like that?
