Rebound congestion is very common in those who use inhaled decongestants. It is NOT an antihistamine.
I have seen many people who develop this and it is usually useless to try to explain it to them. Somehow they dont realize the relief the get with a spray and the worse congestion that follows are effects the same drug.
It is very difficult to break the cycle, but it can be done with medical help.
Sometimes oral steroids as well as inhaled ones are used. Success depends very much on the motivation of the person.
A similar situation is using sleeping meds- Rebound insomnia leads to a viscious cycle that is devastating. Try to explain this to a patient by reminding the that it is for short term use only, and they say, "well my Dr. prescribed it".
Sometimes we think our enemies are our friends.
