Posted by Empty Nester on March 18, 2002 at 17:24:00:Well, I spoke to my brother tonight regarding his diagnosis. (If you happen to see this message, Bro, just remember that I love you and I am really very concerned about your health--I'm not trying to get in your business) I suggested that he check out this site to get information on his condition.
He does not have his sleep report as yet, but will talk further with the ENT next week. The sleep study was done at home using a pulseoximeter (sp?) on his finger and some type of device that he inserted into his nostrils. I'm not sure if this format will provide the full gamut of information required to assess the extent of the OSA that a sleep study in a lab would provide.
I gave him the name of my sleep specialist and urged him to get a referral before having any surgery done. He is concerned about the nuisance factor of schlepping a CPAP around when traveling as well as the vanity thing of being a 40-something male in his prime who is hooked up to a hose for the rest of his life in order to sleep. I would really appreciate any and all comments from the guys out there who fall into his age category who can speak to his concerns. My husband and I are somewhat older, so I think there is somewhat less credibility in his mind of our being able to relate. Unfortunately, I think his ENT has reinforced the idea that the CPAP is more of a nuisance than the life-supporting medical device that it really is and seems to be dangling the surgical options as the way to go for someone in his circumstances.
Would all the younger guys out there be so kind as to relate their experiences with treatment of OSA , including surgery vs. CPAP, and whether you were satisfied or not with the outcome for the long-term. I think if some of you would be willing to share your own initial reactions to the diagnosis and how you ultimately arrived at your decisions to go one way or the other (or both) in treatment, perhaps he might have some of his questions answered.
Thanks in advance for your help.
