I got desperate one night and tried using one of those bandana things that skiers wear to keep their ears warm. It definitely stopped the air from going in my eyes, which was quite an improvement. However, it is meant to be quite tight around the head and wasn't as comfortable as I'd like. It was also quite warm being made of that synthetic material used in winter vests.

I had another thought. Has anyone ever tried using the black eye patches they give you on planes to block out the light? They are held on by a simple thin elastic around the back of the head and are usually big enough to cover your eyes plus part of the cheek without putting any pressure on your eyes. What do you think?

In the meantime I'm going looking for an old T-shirt!
