I use an F&P200 and would not dream of using a machine without the built in humidifier just for the advantages you mention - I do travel alot.

I think the risk you suggest is very slight over a regular machine. Being a medical device most major brand CPAP equipment is built with top quality components and have very low failure rates compared with regular consumer devices. Keep in mind that the heater element runs at a very low power level - you can touch the "hot plate" when running on maximum and not get burned.

In the unlikely event I had a problem I would expect to be provided a loaner (or rent) until the machine is fixed - going without is not an option. It is after all a doctor prescribed requirement.
