Trying to understand O2 vs CPAP

Posted by kevin in slc on March 19, 2002 at 11:49:47:

I have been reading a lot of posts from rkf, Pat, DougH, RenoTom, etc. about O2 vs CPAP and I am more confused than ever. A post states that their RDI was 22 on CPAP but dropped to less than 2 without CPAP but with O2 added. If the O2 was not reducing the osa, wouldn't the RDI be even higher than 22? Another post said that O2 saturation of the cells gets you past when you don't breath. If the RDI was higher (after cpap was removed or wasn't used to start with), I can see that statement as true because you would be gasping and the influx of O2 would keep the cells saturated. However, if the RDI was less than 2, you wouldn't be gasping and without the force of the cpap keeping your throat somewhat open, why has the RDI dropped to start with? Wouldn't you think that a doctor would have tried just O2 for a month or two and checked the quality of sleep then a study performed to check on REM levels? Interesting questions.
